Episode 1: February

College can be a lot of hard work, and all hard work deserves a good break.  Netflix and other streaming services have made it incredibly easy for one to binge-watch movies and television programs, but the huge selection available can sometimes make it hard to decide on something to watch.  That’s where I come in.  I won’t claim to have seen everything the film and television world has to offer, but I like to think I’ve got quite a bit under my belt.  So, I’ll be recommending some Netflix titles to you all, so you can veg out to quality media.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’ll be focusing on love for this entry.  This isn’t just limited to romantic love however, as nonromantic love can be just as strong.  The love people have for their family, friends, and life in general deserves to be mentioned as well, and I’ll provide recommendations that take them into account too.

MASTER OF NONE

Not all on-screen romances feel very real.  Sometimes it’s due to a lack of chemistry, others times it’s a matter of the presented situation.  Master of None does not have this problem, presenting an incredibly genuine and real depiction of life and love by following the life of Aziz Ansari’s character Dev Shah.  The show is adept at playing with tropes and doing their reverse, resulting in a few unexpected moments.  The romance between Dev and his girlfriend Rachel is neither a dream nor a nightmare, but filled with highs and lows that make them very relatable.  Relatable really is one of the best words I can think of to define this show, so I highly recommend this if that’s what you’re looking for in a television program.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST/FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD

Though Fullmetal Alchemist and its reboot/retelling, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, are animated, don’t count them out.  They are incredible stories with great characters and great action, and are some of the best examples of strong familial love I can think of.  Familial love drives the characters of Edward and Alphonse Elric, and it remains unwavering throughout the shows.  The two brothers attempt to bring their mother back to life using the magical art of alchemy, and pay for their failure with their bodies.  This sets them on course to clash with the forces of evil, both shows present equally epic tales of their battle.  This show has a little bit of everything, and I think almost anyone would find it to be a good time.

UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT

Kimmy Schmidt brings new meaning to the phrase “sheltered lifestyle”, as she was literally stuck in an underground bunker for 15 years of her life, thanks to a manipulative cult reverend.  After being rescued from the bunker and moving to New York City, she develops a love for life that is both entertaining and refreshing.  Her lengthy isolation from society grants her a unique perspective of the world we live in that inspires the people around her, though it gets her into plenty of funny situations as well.  This show is adorable and funny and fresh, with fun characters and a lot of heart.  If you’re looking to learn to love life once again, there’s no better teacher than Kimmy Schmidt.
