Spring Cleaning with Meaning

Spring is in the air, which means spring cleaning is afoot. Whether you’re trying to get rid of clothes you’ve outgrown or trying to cut down your closet to build a spring capsule wardrobe, keep in mind that you can always help charities with your unwanted clothes.

As a student, I have limited funds for spending on things other the basic necessities for survival. This means that shopping sprees and other forms of mindless spending should be rare occurrences. However, as a female in my 20s – arguably at the prime of my life – the limitations of my wallet do not necessarily have to tame my materialism. This year, as I did my spring cleaning, I also browsed the aisles at my local Goodwill.

Another local thrift store I visited is Kathleen’s Closet. Kathleen’s Closet is a New Jersey based nonprofit thrift store whose proceeds help The Community FoodBank of New Jersey develop the capacity they need to feed hungry people in the community. They are located in Mays Landing, NJ and Hillside, NJ.

When donating clothes or thrifting, be sure to patronize reputable places where you can contribute to a worthy cause. The following list contains my top three organizations to donate to or buy from:

  1. Dress For Success: This organization provides professional clothing to unemployed, low income women for job interviews, and gives them a week’s worth of business attire when when they find a job.
  2. The Salvation Army: Proceeds from The Salvation Army go toward supporting adult addiction rehabilitation centers.
  3. Goodwill: Proceeds from Goodwill help provide employment to people in the local community.
